The Metabolic Edge™
Weight Loss & Metabolic Health for Women in Charlotte, NC
Doing everything right and the scale won't move?
The answer isn't trying harder. It's looking deeper. Dr. Natasha Ryan, a functional medicine doctor with more than 20 years in practice, finds what's keeping your weight stuck, then builds a plan around fixing it: functional nutrition, CGM monitoring, GLP-1 programs where appropriate, and lasting body composition change.
Sound familiar?
It's not a willpower problem.
You track your food, you work out, you've tried fasting and cutting carbs. What worked in your twenties doesn't work now. These are signs something metabolic or hormonal is in the way.
- Weight gain around the middle that won't budge
- An energy crash every afternoon
- Sugar and carb cravings you can't shake
- A "normal" thyroid but a stuck metabolism
- Stress, poor sleep, and burnout
- Bloating and digestive trouble
- Exhausted, with labs your doctor calls normal
- Losing muscle along with the weight
- Weight that changed when perimenopause started
- Rising blood sugar, blood pressure, or cholesterol
Why diets stop working
Calories aren't the whole story.
Calorie restriction and more cardio don't work when the real problem is insulin resistance, a thyroid that's underperforming, high cortisol, chronic inflammation, gut trouble, or the hormone shifts of perimenopause. Push harder against those and your body pushes back.
The Metabolic Edge tests for each of them, then treats what's actually there.
How The Metabolic Edge works
We don't guess. We test.
Initial consultation
An hour on your history, what you've tried, your symptoms, and your goals. Then Dr. Ryan chooses the testing that fits your situation.
Testing and monitoring
Metabolic and hormone labs, plus continuous glucose monitoring so you can see how your body handles food, sleep, and stress in real time.
Your protocol
Functional nutrition, strength training, sleep, and targeted supplements, with GLP-1 medications or peptides added where they fit.
Ongoing support
Follow-ups, repeat labs, and body composition tracked instead of scale weight alone, so you know you're losing fat, not muscle.
What we look at
The numbers behind the scale.
Weight is the result. These are the things that drive it. The specific tests depend on what comes up in your consultation.

GLP-1 medications
Where semaglutide and tirzepatide fit.
Semaglutide and tirzepatide are FDA-approved, backed by large trials, and they work. For the right woman, they can be the piece that finally moves things.
The concern is what gets lost alongside the fat. Rapid weight loss costs muscle, and in a woman whose estrogen is already falling, that lands on a body losing muscle and bone at the same time. So if a GLP-1 is right for you, the protections are built in from day one: deliberate protein, resistance training, a bone density baseline, and body composition tracking.
Already on one?
Make it last.
Many women come in already on a GLP-1. Dr. Ryan can work alongside your current prescriber to protect your muscle, find what's underneath the weight, and plan for life after the medication.
Peptide therapy
Foundation first. Then peptides.
Peptides are short chains of amino acids that signal specific tissues to repair, rebuild, or regulate. For metabolism, the ones women ask about most are MOTS-c for insulin sensitivity and CJC-1295 with Ipamorelin for deep sleep and lean muscle.
They don't work on a foundation that was never assessed. A meaningful share of what brings women to peptides resolves once hormones, thyroid, nutrients, sleep, protein, and strength training are addressed. What remains is where peptides can earn their place.

Most peptides are investigational compounds that are not FDA-approved for the uses described here. Educational only — not medical advice.

Common questions
Before you book.
Why haven't I lost weight with diet and exercise?
Because calories are rarely the whole story for women in midlife. Insulin resistance, falling estrogen and progesterone, a sluggish thyroid, high cortisol, poor sleep, and inflammation all make the body hold on to weight. Eating less and exercising more won't fix those. Finding and treating the cause will.
Is a GLP-1 medication part of the program?
When it's appropriate. Semaglutide and tirzepatide are FDA-approved and they work, but they are one tool, not the whole plan. If a GLP-1 is right for you, the program builds in protein, strength training, and body composition tracking from day one so you lose fat, not muscle and bone.
I'm already on a GLP-1. Can you help?
Yes. Many women come in already on a GLP-1 and want help protecting muscle, managing side effects through nutrition, understanding their labs, or planning for life after the medication. Dr. Ryan can work alongside your current prescriber.
Do I need to live in Charlotte?
